Why is the media so obsessed with the Kardashians?

Kim Kardashian-West, arguably the most famous of the bunch

What came first, the media or the Kardashians?

They seem to be unescapable. Every news site everywhere seems to have something to say about the Kardashian clan, but why is this? Is it due to the public’s obsessive need with celebrity culture and the intimate details of their daily lives, or is it because the talentless Kardashian’s need the media for their own careers to thrive? In short, it is probably a combination of both.

To say the Kardashians are talentless was perhaps a little harsh. I am guilty of watching hours of their show Keeping Up with the Kardashians and have become so invested in their glamourous LA lives that you then cannot help yourself from reading the gossip columns about them afterwards. They have proclaimed how they need the public to like them in order to keep themselves relevant, yet this has resulted in an obsession from the tabloid media documenting and speculating about their every move.

The six siblings, plus matriarch mother Kris Jenner, various A-list boyfriends, girlfriends and friends does mean the sensationalism and speculation of the media has been rife for the last fourteen years of their fame. However, the end of the shower Keeping Up with the Kardashians could mean the Kardashian clan may finally have had their moment of fame. Perhaps even the self-proclaimed selfie queen herself may have had enough of the relentless hounding of the media.

The end of the Kardashian era has been subtly panned out throughout the recent series, causing dedicated fans to wonder when they will grace us with their final episode. A quotation from Khloé Kardashian regarding a hugely published cheating scandal, where her boyfriend and father of her child cheated on her with a family friend, says that “It just sucks it had to be so public. I’m not just a TV show. Like, this is my life.”. Perhaps some of us forget that behind the glitz and glamor, they are real people, and everyone is entitled to privacy at some-point. The Kardashian clan must have finally decided their moment is now.

Their need for the media attention will still remain prevalent even without the show. The famous family have hundreds of millions of Instagram followers, using their huge social media platform to market themselves, their various business ventures and their newest boyfriends. Yet, without the show, will the media still be as invested in reporting the latest Kardashian gossip? I’m sure only time will tell…
